Common Spaces

Organisational Structures, Legal frameworks and Financing models

Space for experimental, non-monetary or non-profit activities is becoming increasingly scarce. Whether artistic or creative work, social or socio-political involvement - as a society we need cheap, accessible and appropriable spaces to experiment, network and act together. But how can such hybrid spaces be created and preserved today? What organizational structures, legal frameworks and financing models can be used to produce and sustain space as a common good? urbanize! welcomes international and local researchers and practitioners to present and share their good practice, exchange their experiences and discuss open questions.

The event will be held in English and streamed with moderated live chat. We are happy to bring your questions and remarks into the discussion.

Programme

10:00 Welcome and Introduction (Elke Rauth/urbanize!, Ana Sanchez de Vivar/ Wirtschaftsagentur Wien)

10:15 – 12:30 PART I: Organizing Common Spaces

There are no commons without commoners. But how can common spaces be organised and managed? Which forms of organisation are suitable? Which structures create opportunities for participation? How can sustainable access for different people and ideas be designed? How are decisions made? How are tasks and work distributed? Who takes responsibility?
With La Casa Invisible/Málaga (Kike España Naveira), Magacin/Belgrade (Iva Čukić), Helenes Dorf/Vienna (Gernot Tscherteu, Julia Jesella, reality:lab), Täglich/Stuttgart (Martina Baum, Markus Vogl).
Hosted by Elke Rauth/urbanize! on echoraeume

13:30 – 15:30 PART 2: Legal Frameworks for Common Spaces
The protection of common spaces also touches on many legal issues. Do common spaces need their own legal forms? How can spaces and their open and orientation be secured in the long term? What legal framework can be used to create "democratic spaces"? Which legal forms enable cooperation at eye level between different partners and foster public-civic partnerships?
With Gängeviertel/Hamburg (Michael Ziehl), l‘asilo/Naples (Maria Francesca De Tullio, Valeria Luganskaia, Christoph Pennig), Stadtwerkstatt Linz (Tanja Brandmayr).
Hosted by Elke Rauth/urbanize! on echoraeume

16:00 – 18:30 PART 3: Financing Common Spaces
When it comes to common spaces the question of money is often the first one to arise. How can common spaces be financed? Which (alternative) models ensure the independence and accessibility of space as a common good? How can cheap and affordable spaces be created? How can common spaces be secured against commercial exploitation in the long term?
With Kreativer Aufbruch/Bremerhaven (Ann-Kristin Hitzemann, Hannah Kordes, Niklas Piatkowski), Die Bäckerei/Innsbruck (Adam Holton), SchloR/Vienna (Rainer Hackauf), L200/Zürich (Panyotis Antoniadis, Ileana Apostol).
Hosted by Levente Polyak/Eutropian on echoraeume

In cooperation with Wirtschaftsagentur Wien.
